All young people in Aotearoa have potential, but not all young people have the opportunity. In fact, Aotearoa has one of the highest rates of educational inequality in the developed world, ranking 33rd out of 38 in UNICEF's latest report. Our system is four times (!) more likely to fail a student from a low-socioeconomic community.

The Teach First NZ programme provides you with the opportunity to make a meaningful impact in the classroom and the wider community. The programme is two years long: in that time you teach in a secondary school serving a low-income community while being paid a full salary and study towards a Postgraduate Diploma in Secondary Teaching. After this, you graduate with a Postgraduate Diploma in Secondary Teaching, and are a fully qualified teacher, with experience in leading social change.

Many participants continue to teach in their schools, and move into management positions; others move to fight educational inequality with our global Teach For All partners: https://teachforall.org/network-partners, or advocate for change in the non-profit, government, or business sectors.

Acceptance into the Teach First NZ programme means that you can:

  • Make a real difference in the community and in the lives of our rangitahi
  • Be paid a full salary as you learn
  • Develop your leadership skills and potential
  • Become a qualified teacher with a Postgraduate Diploma of Secondary Teaching
  • Build lifelong friendships with fellow participants
  • Be a part of a national movement towards change
  • Access a network of participants, alumni, education leaders and businesses
  • Receive a salary, as well as 10 weeks of annual holiday, and
  • Receive a fully-funded qualification.

We are looking for graduates who DO NOT currently have a qualification in teaching, as the Teach First NZ programme provides support for you to develop into a highly effective teacher and inspirational leader, to serve the amazing young people in our lowest-income communities across the country.
