I value these weekend field experiences as they provide me with a more comprehensive understanding of safety by exposing me to plant and mobile operations.

4.20 AM

I get out of my cozy bed and get ready for work, then grab the lunch from the fridge I packed last night, and off I go.

4.50 AM

Arrive at our safety team's light vehicle (LV) and conduct the daily prestart on the LV. On Thursdays, the safety advisors maintain attendance on the calendar for the processing team's prestart at 05:30, whenever possible. So, off we go to the mill admin.

5.30 AM

The prestart commences. It's an opportunity for us to identify any high-risk activities planned for the day, allowing us to engage in safety interactions in the field later.
While I'm here, I also catch up with the Metallurgy team to coordinate my weekend field time with the lab and the gold room. I value these weekend field experiences as they provide me with a more comprehensive understanding of safety by exposing me to plant and mobile operations, which I didn't experience during university. Plus, I get to connect with other work crews, yay! This is one of the highlights of being a safety graduate here. I believe not many graduates get exposed to as many diverse roles as I do.

06.30 AM

Return to our office located in the underground admin area, where I catch up on emails, updates from the previous night, and any occurrences logged in our reporting system.

7.00 AM

I have my first meal of the day at my desk and prepare for the day ahead.

8.00 AM

We have a Health and Safety Operations team meeting, which includes the safety team, emergency service officer, and the health and hygiene team from AGAA sites (Sunrise Dam & Tropicana) every Monday and Thursday. During the meeting, we discussed incidents since the last meeting on Monday, who will be on-site for the weekend, what we are working on, and updates from our manager, etc.

8.30 AM

I have a scheduled team meeting with someone from the Perth team who will assist me with a program related to my Graduate Project.

10.30 AM

Drive back to the other Mill admin for a walk around the processing plant with the safety advisor. Throughout the swing, we engage in numerous safety interactions to establish relationships and ensure work is being conducted safely in the field. This is also a learning opportunity as I mentally note what the advisors observe and how they initiate friendly safety discussions with workers. We report any findings or feedback to the relevant supervisors and/or managers and often document these in our reporting system.

12.15 PM

We return to the underground admin where I have my lunch and check for any emails I might have received while I was away.

1.30 PM

The safety advisor and I have a scheduled Department Manager's Quarterly Risk Review (DMQRR) with a Department Manager. During this meeting, we go through occurrences from the last three months, review trends over the year, and assess the Top 3 risks for the next quarter in our SDGM Risk Register, making any necessary adjustments.

3.00 PM

My final task for the day is a planned Workplace Inspection for one of our contractors, which is just a walking distance from the office. I typically organise these at least one swing in advance so a supervisor or a Health and Safety Representative (HSR) can accompany me in their area.

4.30 PM

I return to the office and transfer all the inspection data collected on my phone to the computer. I'll use this information tomorrow to compile a report of findings to share with relevant personnel.

5.00 PM

Drive back to the camp, have dinner, prepare lunch for the following day, and return to my room. Some may opt for the gym or the wet mess (the bar). Personally, I take a shower, video-call my loved ones, and eventually drift off to sleep while watching a somewhat boring movie on Netflix.
