The Jane Street Story

Jane Street is a proprietary trading firm that operates around the clock and around the globe. We bring a deep understanding of markets, a scientific approach, and innovative technology to bear on the problem of trading profitably in the world's highly competitive financial markets. Founded in 2000, we have offices in New York, London, Hong Kong, and Amsterdam. The environment is open, informal, intellectual and fun. You can wear a t-shirt and jeans to the office every day, the kitchen is stocked, and discussions are always lively. Teaching and learning are central activities through classes, mentoring and discussion.

Culture

Trading in the securities markets is one of the most open and competitive businesses there is. Our key to success isn't brand recognition, but people. We focus primarily on being a fun, challenging, and rewarding place to work. That's driven by the quality and cohesiveness of the team, which is why our interview process is so arduous, and why such a large number of current employees are involved in choosing their colleagues.

Structure

We strive to keep our hierarchy flat. The firm isn't run for the benefit of a small group of people, but for the firm as a whole. Decision making is as decentralized as reasonably possible. People who work here are treated like partners and are evaluated based on their contributions to shared goals.

Decision Making

One of the most highly valued traits at Jane Street is a flexible, humble mindset. We try to admit when we are wrong and talk openly about our mistakes. Staying humble allows us to question our assumptions and to update our views based on new arguments. Being skeptical and asking "why" are critical.

Risk

Jane Street manages risk in a highly practical manner. We are extremely conservative when it comes to risks that might imperil the reputation or long-term viability of the firm, but bold when it comes to non-firm-threatening risk. Our risk thinking has an ethical as well as a practical dimension. We do not believe in taking excessive risk knowing that others will bear the downside.

Recruitment Process

The Recruitment Process

As with any interview process, our goal is to get a better understanding of your current skill set, as well as your ability to think, learn, and communicate. We'll try our best to ask interesting, challenging questions during the interview, and to focus on collaborative problem solving to get a sense of working with you.

When we assess applicants we do so for one role at a time, while also considering all our open roles to try and determine a fit within Jane Street. Given this, it's not uncommon for candidates to interview for more than one position over the course of the process. Throughout an interview process for a particular role, you'll have one recruiter from start to finish - this person will manage your interview experience. They'll review your application and coordinate your interview schedule(s).

Internships

We offer internships in four different groups: trading, technology, research and business development. All of our offices follow a slightly different internship schedule, though our typical summer internship lasts 10–12 weeks. You work alongside full timers, and we get to know you and see how you think about and solve the kinds of problems we deal with every day. All interns also spend time in a foreign office with travel and accommodation arranged by Jane Street.

Before summer starts, all of our mentors design projects for incoming interns. Interns and mentors are paired up one-to-one, allowing for close collaboration over the course of your project. Interns typically work on two or more projects over the course of a summer, so you’ll have a few full-time mentors during your time here.
