One of the great things about working in communications and stakeholder engagement is that it is a centralised role.

What discipline and cohort (i.e. 2018 or 2019) are you in?

Communications and Stakeholder Engagement Graduate, 2019.

Provide an overview of all your rotations to date:

I am five months through a 12-month rotation with the Metro Tunnel Project in Melbourne.

My current rotation is across two sites, Anzac Station on St. Kilda Road and the Eastern Portal in South Yarra.

What does your typical workday look like?

  • Check my emails and see what is happening on-site via the time-lapse camera
  • Weekly meeting with the client
  • Head out for either an onsite or perimeter of site walk to see how construction is coming along
  • Meeting with stakeholders (residents, business, government agencies – depends on the day)
  • Sit down with engineers to talk about their upcoming works and potential disruptions
  • Write collateral for community consumption regarding upcoming works

What has been the most interesting thing about your job?

One of the great things about working in communications and stakeholder engagement is that it is a centralised role. You have an understanding of all works happening at both your sites and the project as a whole.

What are the limitations of your role?

The program is tight, meaning things change all the time. We have community and stakeholder requirements that we must meet that sometimes limits the work that can be done on-site. And they won’t let me drive the TBM.

What is something you wish you knew before you started?

As I mentioned earlier, I had no experience in construction. Before I started, I wish I knew how to read drawings and designs. That being said, everyone that is a part of CYP has helped me to learn and grow my understanding of construction.

How did you prepare for starting on the Graduate Program?

The welcome week was a great way to prepare for the Graduate Program. I also tried to read up on John Holland and major projects in Melbourne to get an idea of the environment I was about to walk into.
