The best thing about my job is that I know I am working for the greater good. We play such an important role in the lives of patients and it is my motivation each day.

What's your job about?

I am a Marketing Associate in the Novartis Haematology team, which sits within the Oncology Business Unit. Our ultimate goal as a business is to deliver breakthrough treatments to Australian and New Zealand patients.

I have been in this role for 2 months now after completing the graduate program. Within my team I am the marketing lead for a key brand within the Haematology Franchise, I also support the franchise with key events and congresses throughout the year as well as assisting with product launches.

A day in the life would involve collaborating with multiple stakeholders, field force members, medical teams, finance, digital, external agencies etc. to deliver on key projects that help grow the business and deliver medicines to patients.

The best part of the job is to see the impact you have on patients. It is evident and very rewarding!

What's your background?

I grew up in Sydney, completed high school and went on to study a Bachelor of Commerce at Macquarie Uni. I was fortunate enough to land an internship with a NRL sporting team early on in my degree, which gave me experience in sales. A pivotal moment for me was also getting an internship at Paramount Pictures! This was such a fun experience and it began my love for insight generation and data, which became a key part of my role during the graduate program.

I applied for the graduate program and was so impressed by the overall recruitment process. That was a stand out for me! After making it through numerous rounds, I landed the role at Novartis in the Marketing and Digital stream. It was an 18-month program that gave me many valuable insights and experiences and set me up perfectly to attain my current role.

Could someone with a different background do your job?

Yes! The graduate program was a great opportunity to showcase this. 14 graduates all with different degrees working within many functions they never thought they would!

What's the coolest thing about your job?

The best thing about my job is that I know I am working for the greater good. We play such an important role in the lives of patients and it is my motivation each day. The culture at Novartis is amazing, everyone is so supportive and encouraging and it really is a great place to work. Therefore, when you are making a difference in the lives of others as well as working in a great team, it really is the best!

What are the limitations of your job?

There are limitations to the job; the biggest one would be the processes. It can sometimes take a while to get things going or progress along the journey because of the mandatory processes in place, which delays projects and the overall outcome. However once you kick things off or get things over the line, it is worth and showcases your resilience.

3 pieces of advice for yourself when you were a student...

  • Embrace every opportunity you are given at uni, your internships or new role and have fun along the way!
  • Never underestimate breadth of knowledge, take different subjects, open different doors, because you never know when you will need that information or where it will take you.
  • Research different industries beyond the big four banks and FMCGs as you never know where it will lead you.
