What's your job about?

Prysmian group is a global and the leading cable manufacturer and my area of responsibility is to ensure the quality of telecommunication cables and their manufacturing processes are complied.

My role is to ensure our manufactured cables comply to related standards, customer’s specifications and its processes are controlled and tested in accordance to the international quality standard of ISO 9001. I also manage the testing of the cable before we release the cable to be despatched to customer. My typical day starts with the production meeting to capture any production issues and share any quality issues that require actions. I also ensure all manufactured cables are tested accordingly and test results are saved for future retrieval. I also ensure production’s equipments, laborastory equipments and testing equipments are calibrated accordingly to schedule. I also ensure relevant audits are conducted in production and within other departments to comply to our quality system. Documents related to quality are also managed within my team.

Quality is not all about ensuring the quality of the product, but ensuring the entire organization is operating in a manner that deliver quality processes. Quality is an output to the product, but it is an input to every single department of the organization.

What's your background?

I grew up in the Western part of Sydney in a suburb called Chester Hill.

The most important stage of my life is obtaining international exposure during university as we are living in a world of globalisation, and this aspect is important for professional development. The next important stage of my life is obtaining work experience to ensure I can learn from professionals and grow professionally during my time at university.

I got where I am through a graduate program with Prysmian in 2012. Working at Prysmian allowed me to experience working abroad for 2 years. This is the most rewarding experience of my life as many other graduates from other organizations are unlikely to have given the same opportunity. Working internationally grows you mentally, professionally and prepare you for any future challenges your career may take you. It is the diversity and cultural experiences that are inevitable in our current global business structure that I believe, is an important element to a successful career path and decision making.

Could someone with a different background do your job?

My role requires technical knowledge as well as production knowledge. If you have studied anything related to technologically (maths, engineering, science etc), I believe this is the starting point to achieve to where I am. Characteristics required in my job are (but not limited to); willingness to learn, attention to detail, communication skills, people skills, influential skills and think outside the box. The business is dynamic and it is important that you are adaptable to change as well.

What's the coolest thing about your job?

I enjoy interacting to other department as quality is involved in every single department of the organization.

Tasks I enjoy at work are ensuring production are utilizing tools quality has developed for them.  The success of the usage of these tools are inspirational to me as I am contributing a value added process to the organization.

I feel that I am doing the right thing when our customers and accreditors are happy which is the ultimate output of Quality.

What are the limitations of your job?

In a management position, I bear responsibility to ensure the final product is deemed suitable to the market. I do not work weekends, however, as a professional, I am committed to come in during the weekends to get the work done. I also travel for work, and this sometimes does cross path with the weekends. My job is not physically demanding, however, I need to ensure physical demanding work are performed correctly by my team. Based on this, I require to understand physical demanding procedures. The biggest limitation to my job is technically understand the limitations of our 40+ production lines. It is a learning curve daily at work.

3 pieces of advice for yourself when you were a student...

  • Multi task during university as a student and as a part time employee. Multi task is a daily routine in a professional role, so the early exposure will get you better prepared.
  • Interact with various people at different age, background and diversity. This is a key ingredient to working well in a multinational organization.
  • International exposure during university, such as taking on international exchange at another university in another country. I encourage students to undertake this as we are living in a globalized world so it is important that you can face this type of challeng in your professional role.
