Courtney Skene

In my current role, I get to shape other people’s careers, I love delivering the good news that people have got the job, I feel like it really makes their day, and it makes my day,

Courtney Skene, a recent graduate of the Ryman Healthcare Graduate Programme, shares the value of the programme and how it led her to learn a range of skills and eventually land a permanent position as a Senior Recruitment Coordinator.

“I always wanted to end up in corporate healthcare, I just didn’t know in what particular capacity the two-year rotational programme was pretty advantageous as you get a taste of what it’s like to work in different departments,

“You really discover your passions and where your strengths are, and where you want to head for your future in your career,” she shared.

Joining the first graduate intake in 2021, Courtney was impressed by the quick response and clear communication she received from the Recruitment team.

Her first placement saw her as an assistant to the John Flynn Village Manager, Roslyn Prentice. In this role she learnt a range of skills as she covered various tasks from village recruitment to running resident meetings and creating resident focused events.

“It surprised me how much I loved working in the village, I think that really connected me to the purpose of what we offer at Ryman,” Courtney said.

The village placement gave her a strong understanding of Ryman as she learnt so much from the work she did alongside the village team members. She then moved into Sales Support where she provided administrative support to the Sales team and assisted with village open days.

Her last placement saw her work as a Graduate Recruitment Coordinator. In this role, Courtney partnered with Victorian village teams to support them in finding the right people for the right roles.

“As a Recruitment Coordinator, I’ve done a full circle from working with prospects, working with residents, and now to team members. It’s really exciting getting to play a part in everyone’s journey at Ryman” she said.

Throughout her time in the programme, she appreciated how much support there was from management as they really made an effort to show how much they appreciate and care about the graduates. This included the mentor that Courtney was assigned, who provided support and advice throughout the programme.

Along with the provided mentorship, she was provided with a range of training opportunities, which ranged from first aid training and several leadership courses to completing the Victorian Chamber of Commerce Essential Recruitment and Selection Program.

With these courses and placements, she plans to; “use the transferable skills that I’ve gained throughout the different rotations, as I know that I can apply those skills to a range of different things”.

Courtney's main takeaway from her time in the Ryman Graduate Programme was to jump at every opportunity that came her way, even if it wasn’t directly related to her role, as it allowed her to connect with people from all over the business and enhance her skills.

Courtney is excited to be continuing to grow her career within the Recruitment team in her permanent position as a Senior Recruitment Coordinator;

“In my current role, I get to shape other people’s careers, I love delivering the good news that people have got the job, I feel like it really makes their day, and it makes my day,”
