Pros & Cons

  • The people are awesome - both the other graduates and current staff. This creates a great culture which makes coming to work enjoyable.
  • The business offers many career opportunities and my area has a great career progression structure. I get to work on real-life products and learn about how they are tested.
  • Great culture of sharing knowledge. Everyone is happy to help with things and provide knowledge on topics you don't understand. You are encouraged to grow and think outside-the-box.
  • Autonomy and ownership of work. Support from management. Systems in place for graduate onboarding.
  • I think the work environment should target more goals for newer employees to help us get underway with learning at a faster rate.
  • Large step up from university and a lot of programs to learn.
  • Minimal pay transparency among employees.
  • The commute. Unless you live close to South Auckland, the commute to East Tamaki can be quite long.

The company is very clear about all development being self-led. We have been shown many frameworks detailing where our careers can take us which is super helpful! Heaps of pathways

Culture
Everyone is friendly and happy to help out or share knowledge. The structure of teams are physically laid out such that you can easily walk up to someone and talk to them, even from a different team. Team leaders sit amongst their team and the chief engineers (who oversee the wider projects) are also positioned close-by in the open-plan office. Very open space to encourage collaboration within and between teams. The company has a few staff-led clubs such as Thursday football after work, boxing sessions some mornings, Chinese language classes, etc. Most teams will also have some sort of monthly catchup with a company-paid meal, such as breakfast, where the team can relax and enjoy some kai and banter together (on company time). Friday drinks is also nice.

Diversity
On International Women's Day, the company held a female-led panel discussion that was open to all teams - over 200 people joined, including males. Every two weeks, we have a shared morning tea for women in the workplace. We also have numerous clubs that are very inclusive to all genders, ethnicities, and sexualities. The company recently improved their childcare/maternity/paternity leave policy.

Satisfaction
I have been given an interesting range of projects and tasks. From getting first-hand experience with the products by learning to install them, conceptual design work on CAD, to tinkering away in the workshop to test a prototype. There is also a lot of collaboration with other people.

My team leader is amazing. He is very friendly and helpful. I have found that every FL as well as just about anyone is very approachable. Good feedback on work, and have weekly one-on-one meetings to see how you're doing, how is progress, discuss goals and plans, need any help etc. The only issue is that the team leaders get very busy. But they will pair you up with someone else in the team as a buddy mentor to help you with the day-to-day things.

Office Work Environment
Open plan offices. Good workshop with tools to prototype and test things. Testing chambers for products, model shop for hard and soft tooling. Some 3D printing facilities. Dress code is smart casual. Up to the person so long as you dress modest enough for an office. Some people are in suit pants and buttoned shirts, others are in T-shirts, hoodies, and sneakers.

Recruitment
Interview process consisted of a site tour, structured interview with two interviewers, technical assessment and an opportunity for me to ask questions with two other engineers. In total I got to interact with 7 engineers which gave me a good grasp on the office culture.

Happy with my pay as a graduate. Have not been with the company long enough to receive any bonuses yet, but they do offer bonuses based on company performance. Often free food in the social kitchen due to lots of product testing, company funded graduate events, great coffee machine, food supplied for certain events, social food clubs which cook for each other during office hours each week/fortnight, staff discounts.

Training
2-3 weeks of formal training at the very beginning. Training sessions are held by different Functional Leaders and provide an overview of the team and their responsibilities, as well as the company's policies and purpose. I've learned a lot about how the company works, their purpose, products, and employees.

Work Hours

Work Hours
In terms of hours, I think the biggest things for the company is that your work is getting done and you are doing about 40 hours. I know the company is quite flexible around people arriving earlier and finishing earlier (and vice versa).

Sustainability is a big and important goal at FPA. We are always looking for ways to improve recyclability or reduce harmful material usage with every project.
